With Qantas’ generous year-long status extensions coming to an end back in June 2023, some frequent flyer members with status end dates of July 2023 and later might have been left in the lurch. But the airline will extend its Status Support program to a selected group of frequent flyers by trimming the retention threshold by 20%.

Qantas tells us the temporary reduction is ‘in recognition of the Qantas and partner networks still being in recovery for their membership year, making it hard to achieve the particularly significant target of the Platinum and Platinum One tier.’

Here are the details of this limited-time offer.

Qantas extends Status Support to selected members

Expiry: Membership end dates from July-September 2023

Qantas Frequent Flyer will reduce the prequalification threshold of Platinum and Platinum One members by 20%. However, this only applies to members whose status was due to end in July-September 2023. Granted, this move comes a bit late, especially for those who have booked last-minute travel to try to shore up their Status Credits balance. But it might also be the lifeline for those who are falling a bit short of requalifying.

Unfortunately, Gold and Silver members miss out, as well as Platinum and Platinum One members with a status end date from October 2023 onwards. There is also no change to the requirements for attaining those status tiers.

How does the new status extension work?

Essentially, Platinum and Platinum One members whose status will expire in July-September 2023 will need to earn fewer Status Credits to maintain their status for another year.

  • Platinum: Earn 960 Status Credits (down from 1,200) and take four Qantas-marketed flights
  • Platinum One: Earn 2,880 Status Credits (down from 3,600). At least 2,160 of those SCs must be earned on Qantas-marketed flights (down from 2,700)
