In November we (Charlotte & Zoe) attended the 10th National Children's Festival in Orissa. It took 35 hours each way on the train but was well worth it. It was an amazing experience for us and the children and something we will never forget. We spent 5 days at the camp, each day a different festival celebrated; Kartik Purnima, Eid, Durga Puja, Holi and Christmas. It was fascinating to learn more about and experience different cultures and their traditions. We had the opportunity to wear bindis, have our palms painted with henna and have Alta on our feet. We also tasted different foods associated with these festivals such as zarda (a sweet dish) on Eid.
Children attended from all over India, as far as Kashmir, Goa and West Bengal. They had a range of abilities, some were blind, some were deaf, and others had physical disabilities. The Anjali festival provided an ideal opportunity for these children to show off their talents through performances such as dance and singing and also through attending various workshops. The workshops were also an ideal opportunity for the children to enjoy and learn more in an area that interested them and make new friends. They could choose from pottery, paper making, art and craft, dance, music, magic and more. Ashok attended the magic workshop, Santosh and Seema took part in pottery, Shivani and Narendra enjoyed the art & craft. It was lovely to see the Roshni children get dressed up and perform a dance. It was also heart warming to see all the children encouraging and supporting each other throughout the week. We also entered a competition where one of the teachers (Gayatri) had to paint as many hands with henna as she could in 15 minutes. Although she only managed 4 hands compared to another team that had painted 6, as the designs were so detailed, Roshni won! So we were spoon fed a bowl of zarda in the festival tent as a reward!
There was a fairytale theme throughout the camp, so much time and thought had been put into everything to make it a magical experience for the children. The camp was alive with colour and fun and when it got dark the fairy lights came on which added to the magic.
The days were long as we were up at 4.45am every day ready to catch the bus to camp and we usually got to sleep around 11pm. The day began with a chai...or two! (something we have become very addicted to while we have been here, a day wouldn't feel complete without one!). We soon became used to the breakfasts - upma or rice with Dahl, followed by rice and various curries for lunch...and rice and various curries for tea! But all very tasty. We also had to get stuck in and eat with our hands like everyone else...something we still haven't quite mastered! The Roshni team thought the food was bland....not enough chilli in it for them ha!
In between the performances and the workshops, there were other exciting things to take part in. There was an amazing carnival on the first day where we all got dressed with colourful accessories and paraded through the streets for 2 hours, the atmosphere was electric. We also had a trip to the Indian Air force where the children had the chance to sit in the pilot’s seat of a plane. Me and Zoe managed to ride a camel while we were there too, something we have wanted to do for a long time! Ashok joined us; it was a lot of fun. We also spent one day in Puri where we visited a number of temples including The Sun Temple and Ashoka Temple. We went to the beach; it was lovely to see how excited the children were, especially when we went in the sea with our clothes on!
The overall experience was amazing! The memories will stay with us and all the children forever. The Anjali festival gave children opportunities that they have never experienced before and may never do again. It definitely made a lot of children very happy. It was truly magical!!!
- Charlotte & Zoe
Seema: Seema really enjoyed the Anjali festival. She is an independent young lady attempting all activities despite having a weakness in her right arm. Some assistance was needed, such as getting on and off the train and help with washing her clothes. She participated in the pottery/clay workshop for four days in which she made different figures such as a bird and turtle. Seema got her hand painted with henna as part of a competition that Gayatri won. During the trip to Puri Seema was not keen to go in the sea but enjoyed playing in the sand.
Shivani: Shivani got a little upset at times throughout the trip as this was her first time away from home. Shivani used a wheelchair throughout the trip as it is difficult for her to walk long distances. She needed some assistance with some activities of daily living such as washing her own clothes. The camp was set up to enable wheelchair access so Shavani did not miss out on any activities. She participated in the art and craft workshop, drawing and painting some lovely artwork. This activitiy also helped with her fine motor skills. Shivani looked like a princess when she dressed up for the Roshni performance, participating on stage. She enjoyed playing in the sand at the beach with the other Roshni students. Shivani was a good Hindi teacher to the English volunteers, teaching them some Hindi phrases. The days were long which made Shivani tired, however she throuoghly enjoyed her Anjali experience.
Santosh: Santosh got a little homesick on the first day as this was his first time away from home. Once he spoke to his father he felt better.
Santosh appeared to enjoy the festival, getting involved whenever the opportunity. He wore a yellow face mask and waved a flag as he paraded in the carnival. He danced to the music, smiling throughout. At the end of each evening at the festival, there was a disco on stage for the children and Santosh would always get up and dance. Santosh did not perform in the Roshni school dance as only 5 children were allowed to participate. Santosh was more than happy for the others to perform as he said “they were his friends”. He thoroughly enjoyed watching the team dancing, clapping as they performed.
Santosh participated in the pottery workshop for 4 days. Santosh made various clay figures such as a turtle and fish. He was keen to use the potter’s wheel and made a dish. Santosh was always friendly and smiling. He was helpful, getting water for others. He appeared to enjoy his trip in the Anjali camp.
Ashok: Ashok was independent throughout the trip e.g. always did his hand washing in the morning. It was often difficult to get Ashok up in the morning but he never missed a day at camp! Ashok is a very confident and sociable individual and approached lots of people during the week that he recognised from previous years, he must have left a very positive impression on them as they all seemed very happy to see him.
Ashok is very well mannered, always thanking people when they have helped him etc. He is also very patient, he would sit and wait, along with the other Roshni children, until all the other children had got off the bus before getting up himself and would queue patiently while waiting for food. Ashok was very helpful to the English volunteers and would often translate phrases from Hindi to English to help them understand.
Ashok took an interest in the magic workshop which he seemed to enjoy and was able to perform two impressive magic tricks. Ashok was very enthusiastic about dancing and performed well in the school dance competition. He also got up on stage at when he had the opportunity and joined in with some fantastic dancing with the other children.
Ashok really enjoyed the trip to the beach, particularly in the sea. He also rode a camel at the camp which he enjoyed too. |

Primary Trip to Chambal Ghariyal Sanctuary & Research Centre Morena Date 22/23 February 2011
Objective:
• To stay independent of parents overnight for 1 night.
• To assess ADL skills of students |
| |
 |
|
7 students of Primary section and 5 of the Vocational group, who have never been on an outstation trip or stayed away from their parents overnight, were chosen for this trip. The 12 students stayed at ROSHNI from the afternoon of the 22nd; they came with their bags and bedding and were shown to their rooms for the night, by the assigned staff to assess their personal care abilities. The afternoon started with a tea party and games including musical chairs to help the group to relax.
At 7 O’clock all the children boarded the school bus to go to Central Park Hotel where Mr Ashok Singh hosted a three course dinner for all the students & staff totaling 25 persons. |
|
| |
The hotel staff helped take the wheelchair students up the lift to a Function Hall, on the first floor, where a sumptuous dinner and lively music was arranged for them.
The General Manager Mr Surinder Singh & his staff attended personally, to ensure all were well looked- after. The students & staff returned at 10.30 pm after a full evening of activity. We really thank the management and staff for their generous & caring hospitality. This was the first occasion that many of them have been away from home overnight from their parents. After a long night of partying and getting settled at ROSHNI (some students found it harder than others to get to sleep).
Next morning the day started very early for the staff, who had to heat water for baths and toileting, all the children were observed and later the ADL were recorded on a standard format. Only Ashutosh was unable to sleep well at night as it was the first time in his life he has been away from his parents. After tea/milk and breakfast the party set out in the Bus at 10.00 am together with Col Rawat, who especially drove his car to accommodate Mr Johri (and wheelchairs) on the Trip to the Chambal river.
They arrived at the Chambal boat jetty by 11.00 am and all the children wore life jackets and staff and students filled up two 10-seater motor boats. Everyone was excited at this new experience and also at seeing the Ghariyals, Crocodiles on the river bank, fish in the water for the first time; they also saw lots of Migratory water birds and ducks and had a closer look through binoculars.
After a half hour ride, viewing the aquatic life and diversity in the river, they came back to the National Chambal Ghariyal & Dolphin Research Centre at Morena. Here they saw the eggs of the Ghariyals which are collected from the river for safe breeding. They saw baby Ghariyals, Crocodiles and Tortoise at different stages of development before they are released in the river at 3-4 years. They were also told about the various points of conservation and breeding.
They also saw lots of monkeys in the campus. Then everyone had packed lunch at the dining room of the centre. The trip returned by 4.00 pm and everyone was delivered home in good time and had a wonderful days outing. We thank Shri Ashok Singh and also Dr. R.J. Rao and the staff at the Hotel, the Ghariyal sanctuary (boatmen) and the Breeding Centre for their sensitivity, in ensuring that the students & staff had a happy and exciting adventure.
Thank you very much for your caring hospitality. The students & staff all enjoyed the evening immensely.
We hope you will visit our centre in the near future.
With best wishes,
Manjula Patankar

| News from India |
 |
Just before they broke up for their summer vacation, the Primary Group children from Roshni and 4 of their teachers had a lovely day out on the Gwalior Safari Bus, taking them round all the historic sights of the city. They visited several palaces, temples and the famous Gwalior Fort. |
|
| |
The day ended with ice creams all round at a posh hotel! The children had a fantastic day, as did the staff. It can be very difficult for the parents of some of the students to take them for day trips, either due to lack of financial resources for transport/entry fees, or because their child’s disability makes going out very difficult. So some of the children will never have visited these wonderful places in their own city before. This made the day seem like a holiday to them!
Two of our long-term supporters who recently had a holiday in India had a whip round amongst their travel companions, and the group donated their left-over rupees to us – it was this money which was used to pay for the day out. It just shows how your ‘small change’ can make a huge change to the children at Roshni! |
