Community Based Rehabilitation

We at ROSHNI feel that India's answer to the differently abled and other under privileged sections' rehabilitation lies in its strong support and base in the community.
This is where we aim to make a huge impact, ultimately involving concerned members of the community, utilizing untapped resources with man and material and finally impressing that, people thrive best where they belong, with other people in the community. No fancy gadgets, huge townships and slick paraphernalia are needed for this - using what is available, and who is available for those who are in need!
As a follow up of the Disability Identification Survey conducted covering 5000 homes in two wards of Gwalior, done in July 2004 with Care Nidhi, Delhi and Family Planning Association of India, Gwalior in 2002, there have been regular inputs from ROSHNI.

• 189 children were identified as having epilepsy, hearing, speech and vision impairment, polio, mental retardation and cerebral palsy. 12% of the children have two or more handicaps.
• Parent groups and self-support groups have been formed with guidance from ROSHNI.Our endeavor is to help parents start more such self-help groups. - Awadpura (Indra Nagar, Ward No.60) Parents' Group, since Nov. 03.
